Space sprite history!!!

(still a wip)

i'd recommend returning if you haven't finished reading the home page, which is fair considering the positioning of this easter egg

go back home

ordered chronologically newest to oldest per style, mostly because i cannot be bothered to figure out in what order i did some of these (the gif is but a rough approximation)

SMB Style

CURRENT

the latest, most recent and probably the spritesheet you'll most see for a while until i somehow make something better.
while not the first nes spritesheet, i'd say it is the best. it takes features from both older nes sprites to make a more traditional looking sprite while allowing mobility without looking stiff.

OLD

despite its title, this sprite is actually fairly recent. its main gimmick was that each sprite used was usually new, something i hadn't done before i was more used to like basically puppeteering the idle sprites for new sprites which didnt look very good. hell, the spritesheet here is rarely even used, it best serves purpose as a reference sheet.
while it most peaked in animation, the sprites itself were lacking. they're even more puppety than the last ones considering the limbs were disconnected from the body (which was just a red rectangle and a blue wide rectangle)
the palette aswell wasnt the best. the skin is pure black, the hat and shirt are pure red and im glad the blue wasnt pure motherfucking blue.
and while the palette (and head) weren't made by me (they were made by bixel and i can confirm he's not doing that kind of palettes anymore), they were really good and as a kind of new style in of itself, it looked really cool.

OLDEST (first ever space spritesheet)

yup, this was the first ever spritesheet, and it was smb themed like the latest. truly we've come full circle.
i think it goes without saying that despite being a big piece of history, it doesnt go without flaw. first of all, yeah, this pretty much just is a recolor of the mario spritesheet with a different head. there's a few differences, but on the grand scheme of things, its not that original. the palette is also a great issue. while its not really that bad, its actually just taken from other mario sprites, not to mention the pure black and pure white for the skin and face respectively. it also breaks the 4 color nes rule (4th color is transparency), and relies on an outline for separating same color regions and being in dark places.
overall, its not that good but as a starting point, its not really that bad either.

SMAS-SMB3 Style

CURRENT (Small + Big)

while the big sprite remains practically unchanged, the big change here is an overhaul of the small design. to be honest i think at this point this fits more as a smw style rather than a smas one. currently, space growing with the super mushroom has been scrapped, so the small and big sprites are more so to be used interchangeably or for mods/reskins.

CURRENT (Big)

the idle and walk cycle weren't made by me, they were made by dotX. back when this was first made, it was used as the primary space size.

OLD (Small)

the first non-nes based Space sprite... probably. though it does mark a huge landmark on me making my first good original sprites, with shading and allat. of course its not perfect, but it was still something i was really proud of (and still am).
